Freelance KITAS Visa
What is the Freelance KITAS Visa?
Many of you may be reluctant to work in Indonesia because of the complex process of obtaining a work visa. Aside from the long and tedious bureaucracy, you are also required to have a sponsor from your employer in Indonesia, either PT or PMA.
But, did you know that Working KITAS and Investor KITAS aren’t the only ones that allows you to work legally in the country?
If you haven’t already, say hello to Freelancer KITAS!
Freelancer KITAS is a specific type of visa that allows representatives of 53 professions to live and work legally in Indonesia. No employer is required for this visa, but you can only work in the occupation listed on your Freelancer KITAS.
Who can get a Freelance KITAS Visa?
This visa is eligible for, but not limited to, the following:
- Sports coach and player: badminton, basketball, bowling, boxing, diving, football, golf, judo, polo, rowing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, volleyball, and wushu.
- Entertainment: actress, actor, art director, circus performer, dancer, DJ, director, fashion model, magician, model in commercials, music director, musician, show manager, and singer.
- Commercial: bodyguard, boxing promoter, cruise manager, dive manager, fleet manager, general manager, karaoke guide, marketing counselor, marketing manager, show manager, sports consultant, sports science manager, and tourist facilities manager.
Freelancer KITAS is valid for 6 months and not extendable. So, if your visa expires, you will need to obtain an EPO or Exit Permit Only — a permit to end your stay and visa in Indonesia. Once your current visa closes, you may apply for a new one.
Freelancer KITAS functions in the same way as Working KITAS. An Indonesian company, act as an Impresario, issues a need for a foreign worker. The company then apply for RPTKA and IMTA at the Ministry of Manpower, granting the worker a work permit. Next, the company will apply for visa at the immigration office so the worker can enter the country.
Benefits and Restrictions of the Freelance KITAS Visa
Think of Freelancer KITAS as the result of a union between Working KITAS and Single Entry Visa (B211). You can work legally like you own a Working KITAS, with the requirements as simple as B211 Visa.
Freelancer KITAS is also a multiple-entry permit, meaning that you can enter and leave the country more than once.
Despite all the mentioned benefits, Freelancer KITAS is still limited to certain occupations, and the list is revised from time to time. For instance, earlier in 2023, photographers were removed from the list.

Frequently Asked Questions About Freelance KITAS
Yes, you can legally earn money as long as you work in the profession written in you KITAS.
No, your Freelancer KITAS cannot be extended. The only workaround for this is to obtain an Exit Permit Only or EPO.
EPO, or Exit Permit Only, is a written permission for foreign nationals to leave the territory of Indonesia legally. It also marks the end of any businesses and visas associated with the applicant.
Unfortunately, you cannot do so since the Freelancer KITAS only accept sponsors from Indonesian businesses.
In that case, you may want to apply for a Working KITAS instead. It provides you with a longer validity period and a number of other perks, but with certain restrictions along the way. Check out our Working KITAS service for more information.
Simply because it’s illegal for foreign nationals to work in Indonesia without a valid visa. Under Indonesian Law, foreign professionals are permitted to work in specific lines of jobs such as engineers and other specialists. Visas facilitate this so there’s a limitation on competition with local workers.
